Is this a good move for Ricky? Is it a good move for the Dolphins? Is it a good move for the CFL?

My earliest memory of Craig “Ironhead” Heyward was from his sophomore season at the University of Pittsburgh, when I watched him run over linebackers whom he outweighed by 40 or so pounds. He spent 11 seasons in the NFL with New Orleans, Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis and Indianapolis, including one Pro Bowl season with the Falcons. Heyward died Saturday after a long battle with brain cancer.

Not much in the way of details, but getting arrested is probably not how you want to start your professional career.

It’s almost June and there are still a lot of veterans looking for work. In today’s Tip Sheet, Len Pasquarelli has a run-down of some of the players who still could land contracts before training camp opens. My favorite quote from the article: “Said one player agent who asked not to be identified because he’s miffed his client has rejected two offers that included veteran minimum salaries: ‘You spend half the time pounding the phone, trying to get a team interested, and the other half of your time beating your head against the wall. It’s a difficult period.’” I’m guessing that wasn’t one of the Poston brothers.

Were the 2005 49ers the worst team ever? Does Ken Anderson belong in the Hall of Fame? How good is the San Diego offensive line? These questions and the revenge of the Browncos in the long-delayed return of the Football Outsiders mailbag.

Maybe this plan is just crazy enough to work. Early (early, early) reviews are in and so far so good.

I keep meaning to post about this and then it slips my mind because of all the work on the book, but Doug Drinen of pro-football-reference has started a blog doing a lot of fun little statistical analyses. He’s one of my inspirations so folks should check it out, he seems to be posting roughly once a day. For example, here’s one asking a question that I’ve wondered about ever since our original “Better to Have Rushed and Lost” article — why do coaches treat third-and-2 as a passing situation when the run is so much more successful?

Starting this season, Connecticut will suspend high school football coaches if their teams win by 50 points or more. The following ranks right up there among my favorite paragraphs of the year:
Some have dubbed it the “Jack Cochran rule,” after the New London High’s football coach, who logged four wins of more than 50 points last year. In New London’s 60-0 rout of Tourtelotte/Ellis Tech, Cochran enraged the Tourtelotte bench by calling a timeout just before halftime. Tourtelotte’s coach was arrested on breach of peace charges after police say he struck a security guard and an assistant New London coach.
What do you think? Is this a good rule?

This year it’s Ricky Williams and Onterrio Smith, but the CFL is populated with former NFLers, some trying to rebound from troubled pasts. (free registration/bugmenot required)

I know, I know, it’s college football. But if you were wondering what Paul Maguire was going to do with all his free time, here’s the answer: He’ll be in the booth with Brad Nessler and Bob Griese for ABC’s Saturday night games this fall. Mike Patrick will also work with Todd Blackledge for ESPN’s Saturday night broadcasts while Doug Flutie will be in the studio for both networks. All that’s missing is Joe Theismann doing sideline reports.
